Borosilicate glass tubes are available in different shapes ( cylindrical, oval, square, rectangular, shaped rods ... ) and finishes ( smooth, internally ribbed, transparent, sandblasted ... ) .
To increase their thermal and mechanical resistance and/or to have a shiny, glossy finish, the edges of the tubes are re-burled and annealed. For precision applications, the edges are instead ground and flattened. These tubes are highly sought after for the production of special designer lamps.
Borosilicate tubing is also used as sight glasses in industrial applications and as control lamps for chemical and food plants.
